Pander Bears: Special Needs Election ‘08

There is a battle afoot this year to see who can pander the most to parents of special needs children. While I consider Democrats and Republicans to be equally worthless, it’s great to see this debate in the news any way we can get it. It seems like there are plenty of liars on both sides who will say and do anything to get your vote this year. This election truly is a grand distraction with special needs being one more point of perceived division.

In the news today, Sen. Biden’s Biden’s ‘new low. I really don’t see what all of the outrage is about concerning his comments, especially considering that almost all of the candidates have pandered on this issue of late (John McCain, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton) …

“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy … and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect.”

“Well, guess what, folks? If you care about it, why don’t you support stem cell research?”

Governor Palin also seems to go where the wind blows on a lot of issues, but may come around now that she has a special needs child.

During her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last week, Palin told parents of children with disabilities that she would be “a friend and advocate in the White House.”

But the Alaska governor’s support for the disabled has come under scrutiny since McCain chose Palin to be his running mate nearly two weeks ago.

Before her run for the vice presidency, advocacy for special needs programs had not been a central part of her political campaigns or during her administration, despite her sister’s autistic son.
