H1N1 Vaccine Trials on Children for a $40 Gift Card

CNN has a story detailing the new H1N1 trials being done on children, Kids roll up sleeves for H1N1 clinical trial. It seems that there is no shortage of parents willing to sign up their little guinea pigs kids for the clinical trials. The mom in this story is a second generation swine flu vaccine guinea pig test case.  That was the failed 1976 swine flu vaccine that caused irreparable damage to the nervous systems of hundreds of people and did far more damage than the actual flu. While it is noble to donate your kids for the cause, I can’t help but think that these parents are a little clueless.  No less so than the rest of us at one time, I suppose and hey the kids did get a $40 gift card for their participation!!!

That might make a good t-shirt … “I was a vaccine guinea pig and all I got was this lousy neurological condition!”

Why would parents have their children be part of such a trial? Most say to help others . Christy Stein was involved in a pediatric trial for the swine flu vaccine in 1976 and understands what her sons are going through. But she also believes it’s good for the country’s public health. “I trust the people who are running the study,” she said. “And I’m not concerned about it at all.” -Kids roll up sleeves for H1N1 clinical trial
