Sharron Angle mocked the very existence of autism

This quote goes to the heart of what was most insulting about Sharron Angle’s comment on “autism.”

Russ Steele, a parent whose 5-year-old son suffers from autism, said Angle “owes an apology” to parents and their children with autism. “When she mocked the very existence of autism, she crossed the line,” Steele said.  “Sharron Angle owes (my son) Brandon and every other autistic child in Nevada an apology, not only for trying to undermine their insurance coverage but for mocking the very existence of autism.” (source)

Kathleen Sebelius on Sharron Angle and “Autism” …

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius comments on Sharron Angle’s “autism” comments.

“It is my understanding that Sharron Angle believes that there is a hoax, under the guise of autism, where you would include requests for treatments that may not even be required,” Sebelius said. “It is not only insulting to the parents and children but clearly is a real blow to kids who have shown considerable progress …with ongoing treatments.”  (source)

Reid to Angle on Autism: Prove it, Quantify it …

Autism and Politics lead to some strange bedfellows if I am about to applaud Harry Reid’s statement about Sharron Angle’s “autism” comments.

Letter to Sharron Angle by Autism Dad

Dear Sharron Angle,

Your recent comments on health insurance for autism and the “air quotes” you used when with the term autism are seen as an offense to many parents and caregivers of kids with autism. When you talk about insurance companies should not being paying for therapies like ABA, Applied Behavior Analysis, because people like you shouldn’t have to pay for someone else’s problem; it shows me that you are pretty uninformed on both autism and insurance.

Sharron Angle on … quote … “Autism” … unquote …

Is Sharron Angle making a run for the Most Ignorant on Autism heavy weight title?  - Autism in air quotes? Sharron Angle’s snub to Special Needs children

Some in Nashville are interpreting the air quotes around the word “Autism” as being a commentary on the realities of Autism. Part of that reality is that some people still assert that a child with Autism (or various other “invisible” disabilities) is really just a child who only needs “a good kick in the butt.” Sharron Angle appears to be one of those people. (Gaynell Payne - Nashville Special Needs Kids Examiner)

The Onion - Autistic Child Ruins Marriage He Was Born To Save

I usually love The Onion, but this article, Autistic Child Ruins Marriage He Was Born To Save, is a) just mean, b) full of sterotypes, and c) not funny.  I’ve HAD BEEN a fan of The Onion for years and it’s sad to see that they are so mean-spirited and not funny.

Special needs kids need special parents

A few months ago this appeared in Dear Abby and got my blood boiling, Dear Abby, I’m frickin’ clueless … Autism Aunt Raises Money and Autism Dad’s Blood Pressure. Hopefully, clueless aunt got the picture and realized that the number one thing she can do to help is watch the kid and GIVE HER SISTER A MUCH NEEDED BREAK instead of bitching about her not participating the the family fund raising efforts!
