Autism, Too much to carry

Autism is on the verge of entering a new degree of difficulty in our world.  My daughter is approaching a size/weight where it is more and more difficult for me to pick her up.  This means that the risk factor of being in public goes up significantly.  Going out in public for us is somewhat of a crap shoot.  About 90% of the time, it is not an issue.  We can go anywhere.  10% of the time, it is a complete disaster.

Autism Murder Suicide Revisited

The post on Autism Murder Suicides continues to get comments.  Sadly, Lucinda pretty much sums up what a lot of parents are thinking here …

As I am a single mother of a boy with autism I would never kill him. I do though think of killing myself. This is a black hole that one just cannot dig themselves out of, it is no way to live. Yes he has many talents and is good at them. Yes he has a future. Unfortunately he will alwqays need an aide, and who will step up and do that? Anyone who I can trust when I’m gone? The answer is no and there lies the doom and gloom. A constant state of doom and gloom of my reality takes hold and never lets you go.  Do not make comments unless you are in the same position and live with this day in and day out for 16 years. After you do that, then comment away. Until then keep your trap shut!

Presidents Day: Still no AUTISM CZAR

President’s Day reminds me again that President Obama seems to have forgotten all about the “Autism Czar”. I realize he probably won’t use the term Czar after people went nutzo on this term. He also refered to this person as a Federal ASD Coordinator in his campaign promise. That’s fine, ASD Coordinator will do fine. He did appoint a special adviser on disability policy and applied over $12B in stimulus money towards IDEA (special education funding via the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act). It is also worth note that stimulus money for IDEA is temporary and does not represent a longer term commitment.  IDEA funding has not been raised to full levels.

MMR does not equal ALL vaccines / ASD Kids with Seizures Subset

This makes me very sad because I Love(d) Wired Magazine: A Short History of Vaccine Panic by Amy Wallace.

Amy, the MMR vaccine does not equal all vaccines!

All I do know is that our lives changed on September 27, 2001 when our daughter had her 4 month vaccines. That’s when we had the first seizure of what is as of yesterday 350 or so, so far.
