We are attending a Halloween costume party / sensory friendly movie (Monster’s Inc) tonight at a local special needs organization. I have mixed feelings about the sensory friendly movie. We spent a lot of effort getting our daughter to act appropriately at the real movies and the last sensory friendly movie event that we attended was an all out free for all. Kids running around everywhere, the lights left on, and the sound turned down. For my daughter, this means that she will most likely pat attention to anything BUT the movie. On the other hand, it is so much NOT like the regular movie atmosphere, that I don’t know that she will even equate it with going to a movie. It’s more like going to a party where the TV is on in the room.

Yesterday, I blogged about the new digital Thomas the Tank Engine, Thomas the Tank Engine goes Digital and gets a voice!
Today, I purchased it (along with some expansion track for our Thomas train set) and I must say that they maintained they look of the show to a tee. It looks great! Are there some supped up special effects that they could not pull of with the old stop motion technique? Yes. Is it a little odd to see the trains actually talking and to see their lips moving? Yes, unless you are a fan of Jay Jay the Jet Plane.

It is a known fact that most KIDS WITH AUTISM LOVE THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE. It’s also true that a lot of these kids have a hard time dealing with change. Well, here comes a big heaping dose of change. The next Thomas, Hero of the Rails, won’t employ the stop motion techniques used to create the show since the 1980s. Another big change, Thomas gets a voice. In place of the celebrity narrator, Thomas will actually talk.

Aside from the fact that Thomas the Tank Engine may feel a little ripped off and have Sir Topham Hat’s lawyers on the case, this looks like a great series for teaching kids with autism about emotions. The general feel of the series is Thomas with REAL FACES. It has long been know that shows like Thomas the Tank Engine and Jay Jay the Jet Plane put kids with autism under their spell. You may as well use it for some advantage, like teaching emotions.
