Home is where the autism is …

One of the biggest issues looming on the autism horizon is where will all of these kids with autism live when the grow up to be adults with autism?  As we know, the range of independent living skills is vast amongst these kids / future adults.

We do know that parents of kids with an autism spectrum disorder are a hearty bunch to say the least and I suspect that we will start seeing some very innovative solutions in the coming years.

150 Strollers in Central Park

Very creative representation of the 1 in 150 kids diagnosed with Autism.  This stunt was staged in New York’s Central Park yesterday to raise awareness on Autism World Awareness Day (AWAD).  I see that the 80% divorce rate stat makes an appearance in this article.

As President, I will appoint a Federal ASD Coordinator, an “Autism Czar” …

World Autism Awareness Day would have been a great time to name the new “autism czar” considering it was 1 year ago that then candidate Obama said the following on autism.

Obama on Autism …

“Many insurance companies have failed to assume their responsibilities. Individuals with autism are routinely denied insurance benefits for their treatments. As President, I will appoint a Federal ASD Coordinator, an “Autism Czar” to oversee and coordinate a nationwide effort to deal proactively with ASD. This effort will include diverse but credible research, treatment, personal care/assistance and family support and will work with existing national and state organizations and taskforces. We need to ensure that combating autism, once and for all, receives the recognition and priority it deserves at the highest level of government. This appointee will also have a mandate to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles that may be delaying implementation of important measures and will ensure that all federal funds are being spent in a manner that prioritizes results. We need to build effective communication and collaboration among federal, state and local agencies. Right now, our government is just trying to keep up and, as any family who faces autism will tell you, we are not even doing that. What we know and what we have seen is that America can and must do more.”

Spiderman saves boy with autism (no kidding)

Spidey saves the day …

BANGKOK (AFP) – A Thai fireman turned superhero when he dressed up as comic-book character Spider-Man to coax a frightened eight-year-old from a balcony, police said Tuesday.

Teachers at a special needs school in Bangkok alerted authorities on Monday when an autistic pupil, scared of attending his first day at school, sat out on the third-floor ledge and refused to come inside, a police sergeant told AFP.
