Nocturnal Seizure Monitoring via iPhone, etc.

I have been searching in vain for awhile for some type of solution that will alert me if my daughter has a seizure during the night. 1/3 of kids with autism have seizures. The #1 cause of sudden death during sleep in children with neurological conditions is Seizure or post-seizure state.

*&$(@*! Seizures

As if autism itself is not enough, approximately 1/3 of kids with ASD also have seizures.  We are one of the lucky third and I do believe the seizures are harder to deal with than all of the autism issues combined.  You can teach your child how to behave in public.  You can help your child learn alternate ways of communicating.  You cannot teach your child to not have a seizure. Often there is little or no warning for us.  Other times, we can tell from behavior that one is on the way.  This was the case last night.  Often hyperactivity builds in the time leading up to the seizure.

Autism and Anti-Seizure Meds: Catch 22

We are in the same old Catch 22 with the seizure meds.  We removed one of the two anticonvulsants, Topamax; because of the low dose, the fact that we still have seizures occassionally, and the side effects.

Less seizure meds = more verbal and fewer autism-ism symptoms.  However, we’ve had 4 seizures in a week.  The dilema is do we give it some more time or add the new drug suggested by the doctor; Zonegran.  Topamax for sure seems to have some side effects that impact being more verbal.

Is Mercury Autism’s Red Herring?

I sometimes wonder if those who feel that autism is related to vaccines created their own red herring with mercury.  If it’s not mercury, does that mean vaccines are automatically off the hook?  I have no clue and don’t claim to know, but it does seem like there is a lot of misinformation on all sides by people who are more concerned with being right than investigating the issue.
