Broadway Meets PDD-NOS

We saw The Lion King on Broadway last night and Caroline was great! She was very captivated by the entire performance and even got in on the act. She imitated one of the “African vocals” and the whole place laughed. It was dead quite when she let out an African vocalization. It was great.
Gugwana Dlamini, in the role of the monkey Rafiki, gives this show’s single most impressive performance. She sings around the borders of the musical’s glossiness, giving the production a beautifully jagged edge. Dlamini’s African vocals call to something very primal that is rarely heard by an audience this big. The South African vocalist’s hypnotic song elevates the musical beyond its heavily commercial identity.
I was afraid that she would imitate the lions’ roaring or other sounds when things were quite, but didn’t. Thankfully there was lots of loud music when she was singing along and most vocal. It is so great to see her clapping when appopriate and being so excited. For much of the show, she had a perma-smile. This is our second broadway show with Caroline. We saw The Little Mermaid a few months ago. I credit being able to sit through an entire show to our biomedical and diet interventions. While these have not been a miracle cure, they for sure have impacted going out in public.
