Autism Potty Training Miracle?

If Job were alive today, I am fairly certain that God would give him a kid with an Autism Spectrum Disorder to potty train. Anyone who has attempted to accomplish this feat knows exactly what I am talking about with this subject. There have literally been about a beezillion books written on the topic of potty training a child with autism.
We’ve tried all of the games, plans, procedures to accomplish this goal with no luck. We had gotten things done to where if we told her to go potty or took her to the potty, she would try to go, however going on her own and taking the initiative just was not happening at all.
Then out of the blue, a couple of weeks ago, without pretty much anything new on our part, our 8 year old started using the potty own her own (Numero Uno) with NO prompting. It’s like a light bulb went off. I have no clue what is going on and I have refrained from blogging about this for fear of jinxing it.
While we suspect that some of the biomedical stuff that we are doing is paying some dividends, it could also be the change we made in seizure meds that have made such a big difference in several areas lately. It could be prayers and/or living right. As with many things related to autism, who knows? I am chalking this one up in the WHO THE HECK FRICKIN’ KNOWS, BUT WE’LL TAKE IT ANYWAY WE CAN GET IT category!

I remember the agony and frustration as if it were yesterday. I tried EVERY method in the book, I called the pediatrician and would ask the nurses what I should do, I would scream and yell and punch walls when nobody was around because if I didn’t, I would have exploded. Every time someone would give me advice on how they did it in a day and here’s the trick they used, I would fail again. Potty training my son was by far one of the most difficult obstacles I faced as a parent, right up there next to teaching my son how to ride a bike with no training wheels. I thank God every day that things are finally improving.
My daughter is going to be 4years old in October and I have been attempting to potty train her along with the schools help, She has PDD. Anyhow I have noticed that she is trying to hold in her BM’s now and in addition is developing a rash that hurts her when I wip her. She use to come and get me anytime she did a BM and now she hides from me. I really feel bad because I can see that she is trying so hard to hold it in so that I don’t have to change her and it is making me very nervous. I tried the stool softner and that doesn’t help. Can you give me any advice on how I can help her. I thought about trying a enenima, but not sure. Please contact me and let me know your thoughts..
Thanks
Danielle
Try letting her do something fun while sitting on potty in order to keep her there. Coloring book, listening to ipod, playing on the internet on laptop have worked for us. And of course freak out celebrate reward upon success.
