This “Autism Czar” would have been a great position to fill BEFORE the healthcare debate.
Candidate Obama on Autism …
“Many insurance companies have failed to assume their responsibilities. Individuals with autism are routinely denied insurance benefits for their treatments. As President, I will appoint a Federal ASD Coordinator, an “Autism Czar” to oversee and coordinate a nationwide effort to deal proactively with ASD. This effort will include diverse but credible research, treatment, personal care/assistance and family support and will work with existing national and state organizations and taskforces. We need to ensure that combating autism, once and for all, receives the recognition and priority it deserves at the highest level of government. This appointee will also have a mandate to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles that may be delaying implementation of important measures and will ensure that all federal funds are being spent in a manner that prioritizes results. We need to build effective communication and collaboration among federal, state and local agencies. Right now, our government is just trying to keep up and, as any family who faces autism will tell you, we are not even doing that. What we know and what we have seen is that America can and must do more.”

I have blogged about Autism and Dave Ramsey in the past, but a recent call to Dave’s show really drives home the point that having debt takes away a lot of your options to helping your child with autism. The caller on this day had twin boys with autism, lots of debt, massive stress, and a second job delivering pizzas.

Almost a third of nurses will refuse the offer of immunisation against swine flu because they have fears about the vaccine’s safety, according to a new survey.
The initial response from frontline health staff, one of the government’s priority groups for vaccination this autumn, was dismissed by the Department of Health, however, as irresponsible and ill-informed.

Dear Abby was a tad nicer than I would have been to “Raising Money.” That name alone sums up the ignorance of Aunt Raising Money.
DEAR ABBY: My 8-year-old nephew was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. He has made amazing progress with therapy and has advanced so he is practically functioning at his age level.

CNN has a story detailing the new H1N1 trials being done on children, Kids roll up sleeves for H1N1 clinical trial. It seems that there is no shortage of parents willing to sign up their little guinea pigs kids for the clinical trials. The mom in this story is a second generation swine flu vaccine guinea pig test case. That was the failed 1976 swine flu vaccine that caused irreparable damage to the nervous systems of hundreds of people and did far more damage than the actual flu. While it is noble to donate your kids for the cause, I can’t help but think that these parents are a little clueless. No less so than the rest of us at one time, I suppose and hey the kids did get a $40 gift card for their participation!!!

If Job were alive today, I am fairly certain that God would give him a kid with an Autism Spectrum Disorder to potty train. Anyone who has attempted to accomplish this feat knows exactly what I am talking about with this subject. There have literally been about a beezillion books written on the topic of potty training a child with autism.
