The Girl Who Spoke with Pictures: Autism Through Art

For many years Eileen Miller’s daughter, Kim, was unable to verbalize her experiences and emotions, but she was able to communicate using a less conventional language: her art. The Girl who Spoke with Pictures tells the story of a young woman with autism, and how her enlightening drawings enabled her to share her view of the world.

Deaf with Autism

Instead of comparing our lot with that of those who are more fortunate than we are, we should compare it with the lot of the great majority of our fellow men. It then appears that we are among the privileged. - Helen Keller

I met an autism parent yesterday who has a child who is deaf AND has autism.  My heart went out to this family for the added level of complications related to having multiple issues.  I can only imagine how difficult this was with diagnosing.  Kids with autism are often confused with kids who have hearing issues and having both of these disorders can greatly delay an accurate diagnosis and more importantly the services which can help the child.

The Super List of Autism Treatments and Therapies

When you hear your child has autism, you think, “OK, what do I do to help?”  Well, that question is easier asked than answered.   ABA and Speech Therapy are the most proven, but some other therapies have worked for other kids.  Here’s a not yet complete list from the crazy to the essential.  I’ll let you decide which are which.  If there are others, not on the list, drop me an email and let me know.

More Denis Leary Autism Schmautism Fallout

It appears that there is some backlash hitting close to home for Denis Leary.  Given the CYA tone of Denis Leary’s apology, I am sure he thinks the alumni from his college should wait for their pre-ordered copy of his book to arrive before they cancel their donation to the college.

Seizure! Emotional Roller Coaster.

OK, in the last 24 hours, we had a) the first seizure in 3 months, which about the schedule we’re on these days and b) Caroline wrote her name today at school with no help!  Talk about a case of good news / bad news.

My comments over runneth over with spam …

If any Wordpress experts out there could advise me on an easy way to delete all of my comments and start over, I would greatly appreciate it.  The comments for this blog are 99.9% spam and too numerous to “moderate in bulk”.  I don’t even look at them anymore and legitimate comments are also ignored for this reason.  Most of these are related to a) my manhood or b) getting prescription drugs on the Internet without a prescription. When I say “over runneth”, I mean it.  Thousands of spam comments.

Sith Lord and Wookiee Sleeping in Groovy Girls Bed

I guess I am just easily amused now days, but things like this never cease to crack me up.  It seems that Caroline had Darth Vader and Chewbacca sleeping in the Groovy Girls bed.  Yes, these are the orginal 12″ action figures from my childhood in the 1970s.  Poor Darth Vader has had his arms dislocated.  I think she likes Darth because he wears a cape like The Wonder Pets.
