Disgustingly Ignorant Teacher Allows 5 Year Old Boy with Autism be Voted Out of the Classroom, Survivor-style

I think this teacher has been watching too much of Survivor or The Apprentice.

A Port St. Lucie, Florida mother says her five-year-old special needs son was voted out of his classroom by his peers at the behest of the teacher.

Pope Benedict XVI may weigh in on Autism after the Adam Race Controvery

Watch out, Autism is on the Pope’s radar. Pope Benedict XVI has been urged to tackle the issue of Autism after the big brouhaha over a 13 year old boy with autism being banned by his church.

Adam Race has severe autism and has worshipped with his mother, Carol, for several years at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Bertha. The Rev. Daniel Walz alleges that Adam Race’s unruly behavior endangers others who attend the Church of St. Joseph and has has filed a restraining order against the parents of a severely autistic 13-year-old boy in an effort to keep him from attending the church in Bertha on Sundays.

Family / Marriage Counseling for Autism Families

Thinking about our upcoming time away and how important it can be to get help when your family straining, I came across this great article by Lisa Jo Rudy.   She makes some great points …

Together you and your partner dreamed of a healthy child - now you face a life very different from what you imagined. Your overwhelming feelings, both individually and combined, are normal and natural in the situation but very difficult nonetheless. The needs of the children are often complex and illusive. Searching to find the cause of children’s developmental problems and the best treatment can be a long hard journey. Getting wrapped up in the stresses and strains of everyday life, relationships inevitably suffer from lack of attention. Communication problems, lack of time and energy for personal, marital, and family activities, and social isolation affect many families. When a disability or chronic illness is discovered, powerful emotions surface and may put relationships on trial.

Green our Vaccines / Mommy and Daddy Mini-Vacation! Woo-Hoo!

I am happy to report that we will be traveling to Washington DC next month to participate in the Green our Vaccines march on the capital.  I am pretty down on the government at all levels, but it will be fun to get away for a few days.  Mommy and Daddy will be traveling for several days sans daughter with Autism.  I don’t recall the last time we got away without child.   Grandmother is playing the part of Super Mom that week.  Getting away is something all autism parents probably need to work in now and again.

Weighted vests and clothes that don’t look like something Hannibal Lecter would wear?

I need some help please. Does anyone know of good weighted clothes that don’t look like a bullet proof vest? My 7 year old PDD-NOS daughter likes to wear cutesy, girly girl clothes, and check herself out in the mirror. The weighted vest helps with a lot of issues, but I have yet to see one that doesn’t draw attention to the child, which can be a bigger problem in and of itself for a lot of kids. Tweet This Post

Autism Budget

Keeping on the Dave Ramsey theme, let’s talk about the Autism Budget.

Everyone needs to have a budget, but autism families really, really, really need a budget.  Let’s face it, there are a gazillion autism therapies out there today.   There are a lot of them that are very helpful, but most are expensive.  Money problems are the #1 cause of divorce in America.  Autism can for sure exacerbate financial stress and strain.

Thing #815 that may cause Autism: Pet Shampoo Insecticides

In the news this week is the story that common household chemicals and things such as insecticides in dog shampoo could cause Autism.

Very interesting stuff. I know, there is a never ending laundry list of things that “may cause Autism”, but I do feel a tad bit encouraged that people are starting to recognize that not only could some of these things be true, but they could be inter-related.

Airport Security and Children with Autism

Traveling with your child who has Autism is always an adventure. In our case, it’s usually not a big problem, but it’s easy to see how airport security could trigger a meltdown.  I am the parent WITHOUT Autism and traveling these days often pushes me to the brink of a breakdown myself, so this has to be a daunting process for the child.

A Toys R Us Autism Experience, Toys R Us Raises Money for Autism Speaks, Thanks from Autism Parents

Many thanks to the Toys R Us in Times Square. I didn’t catch the nice salesgirl’s name, but when she asked us at checkout if we wanted to donate a buck for Autism, my wife gave her a “heck yes” and told her about our daughter who was waiting nicely for us to purchase tickets on the indoor ferris wheel.
