When I have a new child come into the clinic, and I am taking a history, I ask the parents if anyone else in the family has an autism diagnosis. The answer is almost always no. But often, after weeks of therapy, one or both parents, after having learned more about autism, often state that they wonder if they have autism. (And sometimes after getting to know the parents I wonder too.) Parents of children with autism analyze their past development and either interpret or misinterpret some of their behavior as autistic. This seems to be especially true of certain high tech professions.

Jenny McCarthy mentioned on Oprah that the #1 thing you can do for the family of a child with Autism is to OFFER TO BABYSIT! So true. All parents need a break, but Autism Parents need one more than most given that some stats point to a divorce rate of 85% in families with autism. We have been blessed to have a Granddaddy and other relatives who will watch our daughter, usually with no notice. Even an hour makes a difference. Since all children with Autism are different, parents require different skill levels. Our daughter is not a lot of trouble, especially if there is a computer, DVD player or VCR involved.
