The #1 cause for divorce is money fights and money problems. Some say 85% of parents to special needs kids end up divorced. Combine these two issues and you could be in for a major uphill battle to save your family. You may not be able to make Autism go away, but you can give yourself a chance of being in that 15% that make it by getting your personal finances under control and getting out of debt. Being debt free will remove a large chunk of stress from your life which should translate into a more loving home for your child and more money to care for that child in the future.

(from Dr. Brown’s ABA4Autism Blog)
When I have a new child come into the clinic, and I am taking a history, I ask the parents if anyone else in the family has an autism diagnosis. The answer is almost always no. But often, after weeks of therapy, one or both parents, after having learned more about autism, often state that they wonder if they have autism. (And sometimes after getting to know the parents I wonder too.) Parents of children with autism analyze their past development and either interpret or misinterpret some of their behavior as autistic. This seems to be especially true of certain high tech professions.

From Jenny McCarthy’s Louder than Words … page 104 …
“Special Diets for Special Kids Two. I couldn’t wait to read it and fill my eager heart with more knowledge. I had to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating, so I read that again. Could it really be true?”

Here’s another story on fever and its impact in autism. Dr. Brown blogged about this subject recently.
At our house, we have had the luck to have seizures as well when fever is present. So, we have spent much of the last 6 years avoiding fever like the plague. I do think there is something to be said here though and the same processes that “awaken” the brain in some kids with autism when they have a fever, are probably the same that lead to seizures. For us, we have even noticed that our child seems much better the few days following a seizure. We have often refered to this effect as “she has been rebooted.”

“Spins” of Omission by Deirdre Imus, Huffington Post
Ronald Regan said it best, “There you go again.” Last week, while all the “experts” were predicting Barack Obama’s big win in the New Hampshire primary, yet another study claiming to disprove an association between vaccines and autism graced the front pages and headline news around the country. One problem, the ‘experts’ got it wrong … both in New Hampshire and California.
