This week, Dr. Brown blogged about “Clinic Notes: Girls with Autism and ABA“.
‘Boys are three to four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. Last week I saw 35 children in my clinic with an autism diagnosis. Only 7 were girls. Not only is autism diagnosed less frequently in girls, it seems to me that the autism in not as severe. (Of course there are exceptions and I do occasionally see girls with moderate to severe autism.) Most of the girls I see with autism do okay with their academic subjects. They have problems handling concepts, and are very literal in their reading. Idioms and other peculiarities of language cause them problems, but for the most part academics is not their biggest problem. Girls with autism tend to have more problems socially than any other area. But then the same could be said of normally developing girls as well.’ - Dr. Brown

In my post, “Dr. Brown on Time Out 101 and why YOU should give the procedure a second look”, Dr. Brown gives us an overview of exactly how to use the time out procedure effectively.
“The child has to stay in time out for three minutes plus one minute of good behavior. In other words, the child has to be quiet and cannot be arguing, complaining, or tantruming for one full minute before he or she can get out of time out.”

Dr. Brown’s Clinic Notes: ABA and Time Out
Time out means time out from positive reinforcement. If there is no positive reinforcement in the child’s environment then time out will not work. I would LOVE to hear from you on this topic. Email me at autism.parent@gmail.com!
We are faced with a dilemma in our family. We can leave our PDD diagnosed daughter in the public school system that is somewhat clueless, it seems, when it comes to Autism. Right now, we have been rejected on our wish to have a full time aide to a) keep her on task (primary function) and b) reduce flight risk. The aide who was pretty much a full time aide for us last year, was moved to another class and subsequently resigned her position (lots of political school drama involved). We tried to hire HER and pay for it out of our own pockets. Rejected. She was qualified enough last week, but not this week if WE pay her.

Is there somewhere in particular we need to take plastic toys from China to get them out of our lives safely? Please email me at autism.parent@gmail.com if you are knowledgeable on this topic.
I started excavating a closet upstairs that is pretty much a toy graveyard today. I didn’t start this endeavor because I was afraid of lead based paint from China, but by about 2 minutes into the clean up I WAS AFRAID OF LEAD BASED PAINT FROM CHINA. We have seriously been invaded. Not by China per say, but by a gazillion little freakin’ pieces of plastic. They sneak in via a happy meals, Christmas, birthdays, prizes for being good at therapy, trips to Walmart, yada, yada, yada.

“What if one in 150 kids were kidnapped in this country?” he asks the candidates. “It would be a national crisis. While these kids are not being physically kidnapped, their minds are being kidnapped.”
And so, he asks these would-be White House residents, what they will do to fight autism?

Autism, the devastating mental illness that affects thousands of children every year, is not a single psychological condition, scientists have discovered.
