Kids with autism are often finicky eaters, rejecting foods on both taste and/or texture. The consensus is that this is just another one of those sensory issues which plague kids with autism. But now an interesting hypothesis carries the finicky eating problem one step further. Prof Treasure suggests that anorexia and autism share the same genetics. According to her, twenty percent of patients with an anorexia diagnosis could also be on the autism spectrum. Furthermore, anorexia might be the female form of Asperger’s. It is true that perseveration occurs in autism and anorexia, as well as communication and social problems. But this hypothesis seems long on speculation and short on data.

I heard it was said on the Oprah show the other day that the divorce rate for parents of an autistic child was 80%? OK, people, they don’t have this kind of thing for Autism families in my neck of the woods. I am jealous. Not really. Sort of.
Vancouver, B.C. – A sold out crowd of parents of autistic children and supporters will be meeting at CAPONES Restaurant and Live Jazz Club, in Yaletown, on the evening of Saturday, September 29th. Dozens of FEAT of BC parents and supporters will be enjoying BC wines, tapas and entertainment by BC jazz performer, Murray Porter . FEAT of BC (Families for Early Autism Treatment of BC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization of parents and professionals working towards universal access to effective, science-based treatment for all Canadians diagnosed with autism. What is Least Restrictive Environment? (”LRE”) Your child is entitled to the least restrictive environment. This means that a child with a disability, if appropriate, should be mainstreamed to take classes with other public school students without disabilities. This can sometimes be accomplished with accommodations, or even a one-on-one aide to assist your child. The aide should be trained and educated in autism. Many times, a child with autism will be mainstreamed into a regular education classroom for part of the day and take special education classes for part of the day.
